ERP Consultant: career guide and jobs
ERP consultants help businesses choose, set up and run systems such as Odoo, SAP, Oracle and Openbravo. There are three main paths.
Functional consultant
Connects business processes to the system.
- Gather and document requirements
- Configure modules such as finance, sales, purchasing, inventory, HR
- Run user acceptance testing
- Train users and support go-live
Technical consultant
Builds what the standard system does not cover.
- Customize and extend the ERP
- Build reports and integrations
- Write data migration scripts
- Fix issues and tune performance
Techno-functional consultant
Does both and bridges the business and the developers.
- Lead solution design
- Translate requirements for developers
- Configure and customize where needed
- Own testing, migration and delivery

Career advice
- Pick one ERP and one or two modules and learn them in depth first.
- Practise on a demo or local installation with a realistic business case.
- Learn data migration and testing, which decide whether projects succeed.
- Document your projects: the problem, your part and the result.
- Build communication skills: workshops, user training and clear documentation.
CV tips
- List the ERP, version and modules for each project.
- State your role: functional, technical or both.
- Include project size, such as users, sites or companies.
- Add certifications and tools you used.
