10 MCP servers for local AI developers

A local AI model is smart, but on its own it cannot see your files, read documentation, check your repository or query your data. MCP servers give it those abilities.

Topic inspired by an article on Python in Plain English. The article is member-only, so this page is our own guide, not a copy of it.

What is MCP?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets an AI application connect to outside tools and data in a consistent way. Each connection is an MCP server. Without one, you act as the AI's eyes and hands: copying code into the chat, pasting answers back, and repeating. With MCP, the AI can read the file, run the search or query the database itself, within the limits you set.

The 10 servers

1. Filesystem

Lets the AI read, search and edit files in folders you approve. The base for any coding help on a local project.

2. Git

Shows history, diffs and branches so the AI can explain changes, review work and draft commit messages.

3. GitHub

Connects to issues, pull requests and repositories for triage, summaries and code review.

4. Web fetch

Retrieves web pages and turns them into readable text, so the AI can read current documentation.

5. Web search

Searches the web for recent answers, release notes and error messages the model was never trained on.

6. Browser automation

Drives a real browser with tools such as Playwright to test pages, fill forms and take screenshots.

7. Database (SQLite or PostgreSQL)

Lets the AI inspect tables and run queries. Start with read-only access and a test copy of your data.

8. Memory

Stores facts and preferences between sessions, so you do not have to explain your project every time.

9. Sequential thinking

Gives the AI a structured way to break a hard problem into steps and revise its plan.

10. Odoo and ERP

Connects the AI to business data such as records, reports and workflows in Odoo, for answers and routine tasks with the permissions you grant.

Server names, maintainers and availability change often. Check each project's official repository before installing.

Use them safely

Least privilege: give each server access to only the folders, repositories and tables it needs.
Read-only first: separate tools that read from tools that write or delete.
Pin versions: install a specific version and update on purpose.
Check the data flow: know what a server sends out before connecting it to private code or databases.
